Kapurthala Punjab Blue Art Pottery Cooperative

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Blue art pottery from Kapurthala, Punjab, is a craft tradition producing glazed earthenware decorated with cobalt blue floral and peacock motifs on white or cream background. Artisans in Kapurthala and Jalandhar use a feldspathic slip glaze fired to cone 6, producing hard glossy surfaces distinct from Jaipur blue pottery which uses a quartz-based frit. Cooperative potters in Kapurthala Craft Village produce tableware, decorative tiles, and garden pots that are marketed through Punjab emporium Phulkari. The Maharaja of Kapurthala patronised the craft in the nineteenth century after being inspired by Iznik tiles and French faience. State KVIC has revived training workshops for young potters to reduce dependence on imported Chinese ceramics in the domestic market.
