Jorhat district is the tea capital of India's largest tea-growing state — Assam produces 55% of India's total tea output, and the Jorhat Tea Research Centre (Tocklai, 1911) is Asia's oldest and the world's largest tea research station that developed CTC technology and improved Assam clonal tea varieties. Jorhat's Majuli island (the world's largest river island, on the Brahmaputra) in the adjacent Majuli district is the cultural capital of Vaishnavite Assam, with 22+ sattra (Vaishnavite monastery-cultural centres) that have preserved Sattriya dance, Ankiya Nat drama, manuscript tradition (sanchipat) and mask (mukha) making for 600 years. Jorhat district grows tea alongside mustard, rice, and vegetables on the Brahmaputra's alluvium.
