Jashpur Tribal Coffee Tea Jharkhand Border Chhattisgarh
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Jashpur district in northern Chhattisgarh on the Jharkhand border has a unique micro-climate (900-1000m plateau) where Christian missionary-introduced coffee and tea cultivation in the 1950s-70s created small plantation pockets that continue to produce coffee and tea consumed locally. The district's Oraon and Uraon tribal communities converted to Christianity in large numbers under German Lutheran and Roman Catholic missions, creating a syncretic culture of Christian faith combined with traditional Karma and Sohrae harvest festivals. Jashpur's Rani Dah waterfall and the Mainpat plateau (Chhattisgarh's mini-Tibet, settled by Tibetan refugees in the 1960s) are eco-tourism destinations connecting tribal culture and highland scenic landscapes.
