Jalandhar in the Jalandhar district of Punjab is India largest sports goods manufacturing hub, producing cricket bats, footballs, hockey sticks, volleyballs, and sporting equipment that supply over 50 percent of Indian domestic demand and are exported to cricket-playing nations. The industry employs tens of thousands of workers in factories and home-based outwork units concentrated in Jalandhar city and surrounding Kapurthala district. Cooperative artisan societies support the manufacture of leather footballs and hand-stitched sporting goods. FIFA-certified and ISI-marked sports goods are produced by cooperative registered units. Willow wood sourced from Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh is shaped into cricket bats in Jalandhar cooperative workshops. Footballs are hand-stitched by workers in cottage units, predominantly by women, using standardised synthetic leather supplied by the factory. The sports goods cooperative sector has invested in child labour-free certification following international buyer requirements.
