Hingoli Turmeric: Maharashtra's Haldi Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Hingoli district is one of Maharashtra's significant turmeric (Curcuma longa) producing zones, with the crop grown on the district's black cotton soils in irrigated conditions. Turmeric cultivation in Hingoli begins in June-July with rhizome planting and harvest occurs 8-9 months later in February-March. The Rajapuri, Saleem, and Sangli varieties are grown. Turmeric requires consistent moisture and shade during early growth: the crop is often grown as an intercrop under mango or banana. After harvest, the rhizomes are boiled in water, then dried and polished for 3-5 days in electric or manual polishing drums to produce the shiny golden-yellow commercial turmeric. Hingoli's turmeric is traded at the Sangli and Nanded mandis. Traditional folk medicine uses fresh turmeric paste for wounds, turmeric milk for respiratory infections, and turmeric-infused water for digestive complaints.
