Traditional Pottery and Clay Craft Una Sub-Himalayan Belt
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Pottery communities (Kumhars) in Una district produce earthenware vessels, tiles, and decorative items using locally sourced clay. The lower elevation warm climate supports pottery traditions similar to those in Punjab and Haryana with which Una has cultural connections. Traditional water pots (matkas) valued for keeping water cool through evaporation, cooking vessels, and festival pottery are produced for local and regional markets. Clay figures of horses and elephants offered at temples represent a living tradition connecting craft practice with religious devotion. Traditional kilns using wood fuel are transitioning to gas-fired kilns reducing smoke pollution. Craft schools and government support programs attempt to sustain this traditional industry against competition from factory-made ceramics.
