Kullu Shawl: GI-Protected Handwoven Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Kullu Shawls are renowned worldwide for their distinctive geometric patterns, vibrant colours, and superior wool quality, earning Geographical Indication protection. The traditional shawl weaving uses wool from local Himalayan sheep and Angora rabbit fibre, spun on traditional charkhas and woven on horizontal frame looms. Characteristic patterns include the Kullu pattern with running geometric borders in contrasting colours - specific patterns are associated with different villages and weaving families. The cooperative weaving system supports thousands of women weavers in the Kullu valley. Master weavers (Karigar) carry detailed knowledge of pattern sequences, colour combinations, and weaving techniques developed over generations. The shawl weaving economy sustains mountain communities while producing internationally recognised craft products.
