Parvati Valley Medicinal Herbs and Forest Ecology Kullu
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Parvati valley in Kullu district is one of Himachal Pradesh's most biodiverse corridors with rich populations of medicinal plants including Cannabis (source of traditional charas used in religious and medicinal contexts), Aconite species, Himalayan herbs, and alpine plants. The valley's steep terrain and high rainfall create distinct microhabitats supporting specialised plant communities. Traditional Malana village at the head of the valley maintains a unique social organisation and cultural traditions including ancient claims of Greek descent. Traditional herb collectors carry extensive knowledge of seasonal plant availability, sustainable harvesting practices, and preparation methods. Medicinal plants from this valley supply Ayurvedic pharmacies. Conservation efforts balance traditional access rights with protection of rare species.
