Manikaran Geothermal Springs and Sacred Water Heritage Kullu
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Manikaran in the Parvati valley of Kullu district has natural hot springs emerging near the Parvati river at temperatures high enough to cook rice in minutes. Sacred to both Hindus and Sikhs - the Gurudwara Manikaran Sahib and the Shiv temple serve as major pilgrimage destinations. Traditional knowledge of the spring properties includes their mineral composition, temperature variation, and therapeutic use for skin conditions, joint pain, and respiratory ailments. The Gurudwara uses geothermal energy to cook langar (community meal) for thousands of pilgrims daily - an ancient sustainable energy application. The springs represent the intersection of geological phenomena, religious significance, traditional medicine knowledge, and community practice.
