Sangla Valley Baspa River Ecology Kinnaur Himalaya

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Sangla valley formed by the Baspa river in Kinnaur district is considered one of India's most beautiful mountain valleys with the Kinner Kailash range rising to 6050 metres as backdrop. The valley's ecology transitions from temperate orchards and forests in the lower reaches to alpine meadows and glaciers above the tree line. Traditional Kinnauri villages with distinctive multi-storey stone houses and flat roofs are adapted to heavy snow loads and scant rainfall. The valley supports biodiversity characteristic of the Trans-Himalayan transition zone including Snow Leopard, Himalayan Tahr, and rare bird species. Community sacred groves (Devi Vans) where cutting is prohibited have preserved old-growth forest patches amid heavily utilised agricultural and forest land.
