Hoysala Temple Stone Sculpture Heritage of Hassan — Belur and Halebidu

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Hassan district is the heartland of the Hoysala dynasty (11th–14th century CE), containing the most elaborate stone temple complexes ever built in India — the Chennakeshava temple at Belur (1117 CE) and the Hoysaleshwara temple at Halebidu (1121 CE). The star-shaped (stellate) platform on which both temples stand is unique to Hoysala architecture, allowing sculptors to work on multiple angled wall surfaces simultaneously. Over 650 carved panels on the Hoysaleshwara temple's exterior depict a continuous narrative frieze of elephants, horses, scrolling foliage, mythological scenes, and exquisite devata figures. The carving medium — a soft chloritic schite (soap stone) that hardens upon exposure to air — enabled the extraordinary level of sculptural detail. Both temples are UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the Hoysala Sacred Ensembles.
