Hajipur Vaishali Betel Paan Leaf Bihar
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Hajipur in Vaishali district Bihar is one of the country leading centres for betel (paan) leaf cultivation, with the Magahi paan variety from the Hajipur-Patna belt renowned across India for its sweet, thin-veined leaf that does not cause mouth darkening. Magahi paan cultivation requires raised bamboo scaffolding (barza) to shade the vines, precise water spray twice daily, and hand-picking of tender green leaves. Paan cultivation is labour-intensive and practised by Barui community cooperative members on small plots of 0.1-0.3 hectares per family. The Hajipur paan cooperative markets daily fresh leaf consignments to paan shops in Patna, Varanasi, Kolkata, and Delhi. Magahi paan holds a Geographical Indication tag. Bihar Horticulture Development Society cooperative programme supports barza construction and drip irrigation adoption among new Barui community members.
