Gond Painting Patangarh Dindori Madhya Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Gond tribal painting from Patangarh village in Dindori district of Madhya Pradesh is a living art tradition rooted in the belief that seeing a good image brings good luck — images painted by Gond artists on walls, floors, and objects imbue the home with protective power and invite the attention of ancestral spirits. The Gond style developed on paper and canvas is characterized by fine intricate dot-and-dash textures filling every interior surface of a figure — a tree trunk, animal skin, or human garment — creating a vibrating visual quality. Artists depict forest subjects: Mahua trees in bloom, tiger, peacock, fish, elephant, and the Hindu-Gond hybrid deity Bada Dev. Jangarh Singh Shyam (1962-2001) of Patangarh is credited with translating the traditional wall-painting vocabulary onto paper for the national and international fine art market in the 1980s — his work is held by the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Gond painting today has been adopted by a large community of Gond artists across Dindori and Mandla districts. Well-known second-generation artists include Durga Bai Vyam and Subhash Vyam, whose picture book collaborations with Tara Books in Chennai have brought Gond art to international children's literature. Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation (TRIFED) and MP Tribal Cooperative Marketing Federation market Gond paintings. Export to USA and European galleries and museum shops. Training in archival paper preparation and acid-free pigment adaptation for international conservation standards.
