Forest Honey Beeswax Karbi Anglong Assam Tribal Collection

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Forest honey collection from wild rock bee (Apis dorsata) nests is a traditional livelihood of tribal communities in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts of Assam, one of the biodiversity-rich forested areas of northeast India. Karbi honey collectors have developed a detailed local knowledge system for locating bee nests on cliff faces and tall trees and for harvesting in the pre-monsoon season when combs are heaviest with honey. Traditional collection uses smoke from specific plants to calm bees and bamboo poles with clay-coated leaf torches for night collection when bees are less aggressive. Wild Apis dorsata honey from Assam hill forests has a distinctive dark colour, high mineral content, and complex floral character from the diverse Assam forest flora. Beeswax from the combs is rendered and sold separately to batik manufacturers and cosmetics producers. Forest department permits govern honey collection from tiger reserve buffer zones. Honey collector cooperatives in Karbi Anglong market wild forest honey under premium labels for organic honey buyers. International demand for traceable single-origin wild honey has created premium export opportunities for Assam tribal honey cooperatives working with fair trade certification bodies.
