Etikoppaka Lacquer Toy Turning East Godavari Andhra Pradesh

Etikoppaka lacquer toy turning is a GI-tagged craft from Etikoppaka village on the Varaha river in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. Artisan families turn soft Ankudu wood (Wrightia tinctoria) on a traditional bow-and-rope lathe to produce smooth wooden forms which are then decorated with natural lac resin dissolved in organic colour pigments. Unlike synthetic-lacquer toys, the Etikoppaka technique applies coloured lac directly to the spinning wood while it is still warm from lathe friction, fusing colour into the wood surface. Traditional subjects include miniature dolls in bridal and bridegroom dress, animals, birds, and miniature kitchen sets. The vibrant natural palette of orange, yellow, black, and red comes from non-toxic natural dyes safe for children. Artisan families in Etikoppaka and surrounding hamlets pass down the lathe skill and lac colour formulas through direct apprenticeship. Etikoppaka toys are displayed at national craft fairs and have found export markets in Europe and Japan. The Andhra Pradesh government promotes Etikoppaka toy-making as heritage artisan livelihood for East Godavari communities.
