Bhavani Power Loom Textile Cluster of Erode
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Erode district is Tamil Nadu's foremost power-loom textile centre, producing the widest variety of cotton fabrics in India — sheetings, shirting, dress materials, and furnishing fabric. The Bhavani, Gobichettipalayam, and Erode town clusters together have over 1.5 lakh power looms producing fabric valued at thousands of crores annually. The Erode Textile Mall and the Bhavani Jamakkalam (floor rug) are iconic products — the Bhavani Jamakkalam, a thick multi-coloured cotton rug made from waste yarn, has a GI tag. The jamakkalam's bright geometric patterns use leftover yarns from the main weaving process, making it a zero-waste product. Erode's textile traders act as intermediaries for India's readymade garment export industry.
