Kanuru Paddy Cultivation in the Godavari Delta, Eluru Region
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Eluru and the West Godavari delta region support some of the most intensive paddy cultivation in India, with the Godavari canal system enabling two to three crops annually on alluvial delta soils. The region produces Sona Masuri (BPT 5204) rice — Andhra's preferred variety for daily cooking — as well as glutinous (jeela) rice for traditional sweets and snacks. Traditional paddy cultivation in the Eluru delta involves transplanting seedlings raised in nursery beds into standing water in bunded fields, a technique requiring skilled labour for precision planting at correct spacing. Post-harvest rice straw is used for thatching, cattle fodder, and mushroom cultivation — a zero-waste crop management system maintained by traditional farming households. The delta's rice mills process the paddy for both local consumption and export.
