Godavari Riverside Temple and Pushkar Bathing Tradition of Eluru Region
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Godavari river flowing past Eluru district supports an ancient tradition of sacred bathing (snanam) at riverside temples and ghats. The most significant sacred event is the Pushkaram — a twelve-year cycle festival when Jupiter enters specific zodiac positions, making bathing in the Godavari particularly auspicious. The Godavari Pushkaram draws tens of millions of devotees from across India to bathe at the designated ghats. Eluru region's riverside temples include the Bhimavaram Somaraoopeta temples, which have been maintained as sacred bathing sites for over a millennium. Traditional bathing ghats — stone-stepped platforms descending to the river — are maintained by temple trusts and provide the infrastructure for daily ritual bathing by the riverside communities.
