Bhimavaram Mangrove and Godavari Delta Ecology, Eluru Region

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Godavari delta's tidal mangrove forests around Bhimavaram in Eluru district provide critical ecological services — acting as nursery grounds for commercially important fish and prawn species, protecting the coastline from erosion, and sequestering significant quantities of carbon in their dense root systems. Key mangrove species include Rhizophora mucronata, Avicennia marina, and Aegiceras corniculata. Traditional fishing communities in Bhimavaram maintain detailed oral knowledge of the mangrove ecosystem's seasonal fish production cycles, timing their fishing effort to match the exit of juvenile fish from the mangrove nursery habitat. The AP Forest Department's Joint Forest Management programme engages coastal village communities in mangrove restoration, with women's groups taking the lead in propagule collection, nursery raising, and planting.
