Machkund: The Sacred Kund and Water Pilgrimage of Dholpur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Machkund, near Dholpur town on the banks of the Chambal, is a sacred bathing tank associated with the mythological king Muchukunda who slept for aeons and burned Kala Yavana with his gaze when awakened by Krishna. The tank is a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus from Rajasthan, UP, and MP. The ghats at Machkund feature multiple temples built between the 10th and 18th centuries, including shrines to Rama, Sita, Hanuman, and Shiva. The kund itself is fed by natural springs emerging from the Vindhyan rock face, maintaining water throughout the year. Ritual bathing during Kartik Purnima draws large crowds. The architecture of the ghat temples shows a synthesis of Rajput, Mughal, and Bundela styles, reflecting Dholpur's position as a historical frontier zone between multiple kingdoms.
