Dhokra Metal Casting Khunti Jharkhand
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Jharkhand Dhokra metal casting is practiced by the Dhokra Damar communities of Khunti, Ranchi, and Seraikela districts using the ancient cire perdue (lost-wax) process. Artisans build a clay and rice-husk ash core, shape beeswax details over it, encase it in clay, then burn out the wax and pour molten brass or bell metal. The resulting figurines include horses, elephants, women carrying water pots, tribal musician figures, and deity forms. Jharkhand Dhokra differs from Bastar Dhokra in using thicker wax threads for coarser texture and emphasising tribal musician and hunting scene motifs. The West Bengal-Jharkhand Dhokra corridor stretches from Bikna to Khunti. Jharkhand Craft Development Corporation provides material support and exhibition linkage for tribal artisan families.
