Mewar Tribal Textile Craft of Chittorgarh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Bhil and Garasia tribal communities of Chittorgarh district maintain distinctive textile traditions that differ from mainstream Rajasthani textiles. Tribal women weave and embroider their own garments using looms set up in courtyards, producing thick cotton fabrics in deep red and black with embroidered geometric borders. The embroidery technique uses chain stitch and running stitch in bright wool thread on cotton ground, forming angular floral and animal motifs. Traditional Bhil dress for women includes a heavy gathered skirt (ghagra), blouse (kanchali), and a distinctive wrap (odhni) with mirror-work border. Bead necklaces and heavy silver jewellery complete the ensemble. Tribal fairs (haats) at pilgrimage sites serve as textile markets where families trade cloth. Government craft missions and women's cooperatives are helping tribal artisans access urban boutique and export markets.
