Swarnamukhi River and Srikalahasti Ecological Heritage, Chittoor

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Swarnamukhi river flowing through Srikalahasti in Chittoor district is considered one of South India's sacred rivers, associated with the ancient Srikalahasti Shiva temple. The river's ecology — including migratory fish species, freshwater otters, and diverse bird species — reflects the relative health of the river within the temple's immediate vicinity where traditional prohibitions have minimised fishing and pollution. The Srikalahasti hills and their scrub forests support endemic lizard species and are part of the Eastern Ghats biodiversity zone. The river's periodic flooding replenishes the alluvial soils of the Srikalahasti plain, supporting the traditional agricultural ecology that has sustained the temple town for over two millennia.
