Chitradurga Fort — Multi-Layered Rock Fortification Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Chitradurga Fort (Kallina Kote — stone fort) is one of South India's most remarkable military architectural achievements, built progressively over seven concentric rings into and around a complex of granite inselbergs. The fort covers 1,500 acres and contains 19 temples, 4 secret entrances (onake obbavva kattes), 38 watchtowers, and a labyrinthine network of passages between the rock formations. It was progressively strengthened by the Nayakas of Chitradurga from the 16th through 18th centuries before its final capture by Hyder Ali in 1779. The fort's hydraulic engineering is remarkable — 36 fresh water tanks were hewn into the granite to provide a self-sufficient siege water supply. The fort and its legendary defender Onake Obbavva — a woman who single-handedly repelled a Hyder Ali attack through a narrow passage — are central to Karnataka's folk identity.
