Chhota Udaipur Tribal Heritage Museum: Living Cultural Archive
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Chhota Udaipur Tribal Museum, managed by the Gujarat government's Tribal Research and Training Institute (TRTI), is one of India's finest repositories of Adivasi material culture from Gujarat's tribal belt. The museum's collection includes traditional tools, weapons, musical instruments, textile and embroidery samples, ceremonial objects, ritual art, and household implements from the Bhil, Rathwa, Naikda, Dhodiya, and Kotwalia communities of Chhota Udaipur and surrounding districts. The architecture of the museum building itself incorporates traditional Bhil and Rathwa design elements. Live craft demonstrations by resident artisans allow visitors to see pithora painting, embroidery, bamboo craft, and musical instrument making in progress. The museum's documentation programme has produced the most comprehensive records of Chhota Udaipur's intangible cultural heritage, including recordings of dying song forms and oral traditions.
