Chanderi Silk Weaving — 2,300-Year-Old Textile Tradition
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Chanderi in Ashoknagar district, Madhya Pradesh, has produced fine silk fabric since at least 300 BCE (mentioned in the Mahabharata). Chanderi sarees combine silk warp with cotton or silk weft on traditional pit looms. The signature zari (gold/silver thread) patterns include kalga (mango motif), dandidar (striped), and asharfi (coin pattern). Master weavers can produce fabric so fine that a full saree (6 meters) weighing just 150–200 grams can be passed through a ring. Chanderi has a GI tag. The fabric production uses natural dyes made from marigold, indigo, and pomegranate rind. About 3,700 active loom households remain, down from 15,000 in the 1970s.
