Chanderi Silk Cotton Saree Weaving Ashoknagar Madhya Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Chanderi sarees woven in Chanderi town of Ashoknagar district in Madhya Pradesh are celebrated for their extraordinary lightness and translucency — a quality derived from the unique weave structure combining cotton warp with pure silk weft at a very low count, producing a diaphanous fabric through which a hand is visible when held to light. Chanderi has been a weaving center since the Vedic period; the town's weaving history is documented from the Malwa Sultanate era in the 15th century. The signature weave uses a plain tabby with supplementary brocade (jangla) motifs woven by inserting gold or silver zari along with coloured silk weft in the pallav and borders. Three types of Chanderi fabric are produced: pure katan silk (strongest, highest lustre), silk-cotton combination (most popular — cotton warp, silk weft), and chanderi cotton (cotton throughout, for hot weather). Motifs include coins (asharfi), peacock feathers, lotus, flowers, and geometric patterns woven as supplementary discontinuous brocade work. The Kosti and Ansari Muslim weaver communities are the primary practitioners. GI tag awarded in 2005. MPHANDLOOM (Madhya Pradesh Handloom Corporation) procures and markets Chanderi. Export to Indian diaspora USA and Europe through luxury saree retailers. Training in jacquard-mechanism loom adaptation for complex brocade and contemporary dress fabric yardage for fashion designers.
