Bodo Dokhona Riha Traditional Weaving Assam Tribal
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bodo women of the Brahmaputra valley in Assam weave the Dokhona (wraparound lower garment) and Riha (upper garment) on traditional frame looms using locally grown cotton and wild silk. Bodo weaving patterns feature bold geometric designs in black, red, white, and green based on natural motifs like the pheasant, serpent, and river wave. Each pattern carries cultural significance linked to Bodo clans and occasions. The Government of Assam has accorded GI status to Bodo textiles. BNCCI (Bodo National Chamber of Commerce and Industry) cooperatives provide yarn, designs, and market linkages to Bodo women weavers, helping them earn regular income from their traditional craft.
