Satpura Tapti Watershed and Traditional Water Management of Betul
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Betul sits in the headwaters of the Tapti system, with multiple tributaries draining the southern Satpura slopes. The dense forest cover means stream baseflows are maintained well into the dry season, providing reliable water for downstream communities. Traditional water management in Betul forest-edge villages uses dug wells and small diversion channels from perennial streams rather than large dams. These simple water structures are maintained with minimal labour by individual households or small groups. Community water rights are established by upstream-downstream sequence: the community nearest the spring gets first draw, and downstream communities have customary rights to flow that must not be obstructed. In drought years, these customary rights become critical and are enforced through village council mediation. The MP government water conservation programme has mapped 800 natural water sources in Betul district for protection.
