Farm Pond Construction for Drought-Proofing in Beed
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Beed district's severe drought vulnerability has made farm pond construction a priority intervention under MNREGA and state government schemes. Farm ponds are excavated depressions of 10,000 to 50,000 litres capacity dug on farmland to harvest runoff from the farmer's own fields during monsoon. Water stored in farm ponds supplements irrigation for a protective second application during dry spells that increasingly interrupt the kharif growing season. The Maharashtra government's Magel Tyala Shet Talen (every farm a pond) scheme has constructed over 500,000 farm ponds across drought-prone districts including Beed. Traditional knowledge of low-point locations suitable for water harvesting is integrated with GIS topographic analysis in site selection. Farm ponds covered with plastic lining reduce evaporation by 60-70% in Beed's hot dry summers. Water stored in ponds has enabled Beed farmers to grow a short-duration rabi crop on small plots, reducing migration necessity.
