Bastar Iron Nail Smelting Agaria Tribe Chhattisgarh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Agaria tribe of Bastar and Durg districts of Chhattisgarh are one of the few remaining communities practicing traditional iron smelting using clay furnaces and wood charcoal, producing iron nails, agricultural tools, and decorative iron artifacts. Agaria smelting knowledge, passed down through generations, uses local laterite iron ore and calculates charcoal-to-ore ratios by smell and sound. The craft faces extinction due to cheap factory iron imports. Cooperative support programmes under CGMSC and TRIFED provide Agaria artisans with design training to produce decorative iron wall art, tribal figurines, and household items that sell in craft markets at premium prices, providing viable income without requiring the endangered smelting technology.
