Barnala Paddy Rice Farming Malwa Punjab
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Barnala district is part of the paddy-wheat rotation belt of central Punjab Malwa, where farmers grow PR-126 and Pusa Basmati 1509 varieties transplanted in June and harvested by combine in September-October. Barnala's paddy cultivation is fully mechanised from land preparation through harvest, with laser land levellers, paddy transplanters, and combine harvesters rented from custom-hiring centres. The district's post-harvest stubble burning has been a major environmental issue; Barnala farmers are targeted by the Punjab Remote Sensing Centre's satellite-based fire detection system and offered incentive payments for Happy Seeder wheat drilling over unburned stubble.
