Barnala Murrah Buffalo Dairy Farming Punjab

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Barnala district's dairy sector is built around the Murrah buffalo, the world's highest-yielding buffalo breed that produces 10 to 15 litres of fat-rich milk per day and is indigenous to the Malwa-Haryana belt. Barnala farmers maintain Murrah herds fed on paddy straw, green fodder, and oil cake concentrate in small household dairy units or pucca pukka shade sheds, supplying raw milk to the Verka cooperative's village dairy collection centres. The Murrah's high milk fat content makes Barnala's dairy famous for ghee quality, and progressive farmers earning Rs 40,000 to 60,000 per month from premium ghee sales have driven aspirational investment in high-yielding Murrah stock.
