Barnala Khadi Cotton Hand Spinning Cooperative
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The Barnala KVIC khadi spinning cooperative employs village women from Barnala and Sangrur in home-based cotton spinning using improved charkha frames provided by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission. Spinners receive cotton slivers from the cooperative centre, spin them into standard counts of yarn, and return yarn for quality checking and payment by weight. Barnala khadi is woven into kurta-pyjama fabric and sold through KVIC emporiums in Chandigarh and Delhi; the cooperative provides year-round supplementary income to 300 to 500 women spinners who can work on charkhas while managing household duties.
