Bamboo Decoration Craft Raipur Chhattisgarh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Bamboo decorative craft produced in Raipur district and Kondagaon artisan clusters of Chhattisgarh uses the state's abundant Dendrocalamus strictus (solid bamboo) and Bambusa arundinacea forests for producing furniture, utility objects, and decorative items for household and export market. Chhattisgarh tribal communities (Halba, Gond, Kamar) have practiced bamboo weaving and carving as both utilitarian craft and as ceremonial production — bamboo poles are carved for wedding posts (bhitia) and village boundary markers. Commercial bamboo craft production was systematized through TRIFED and Chhattisgarh Tribal Development Corporation cooperative programs. Artisans in Raipur, Bastar, and Dhamtari produce lampshades, trays, decorative wall panels, furniture frames, and garden items. Split bamboo mat weaving for floor covering (satrangi) and bamboo strip baskets for grain storage and carrying are the primary traditional forms. Contemporary product development at the Crafts Development Institute, Raipur has introduced bamboo-fiber composite furniture and decorative accessories for urban architecture market. National Bamboo Mission funding supports plantation development for artisan supply and training centers for improved product design. Export to European fair trade buyers through KVIC and NGO linkages. Tourism retail at Raipur airport craft shop and Bastar Haat.
