Ballia Chaita Birha Folk Song Bhojpuri Uttar Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Ballia district in eastern Uttar Pradesh is a heartland of Bhojpuri folk music traditions, particularly the Chaita (spring songs of March-April) and Birha (narrative song of separation and longing) genres that have shaped Bhojpuri popular music across the diaspora. Birha is a competitive call-and-response narrative song form performed by travelling singer-poets called Birhaiya who compose spontaneous verse on mythological, agricultural, and political themes while a chorus of three to four musicians plays the dholak, harmonium, and duff. Ballia district's Birhaiya tradition has produced nationally recognised singers including Hira Lal Yadav whose recordings on HMV from the 1970s brought Birha to urban audiences. Chaita songs are sung during the Navratri season to invoke Goddess Chandi and are integral to Ballia's spring harvest celebrations. The Bhojpuri Birha tradition is included in the UP Intangible Cultural Heritage register and receives support from the Sangeet Natak Akademi for documentation and performance events.
