Aurangabad Ajanta Ellora Himroo Paithani Craft Maharashtra

Aurangabad district is Maharashtra's heritage capital — home to Ajanta cave paintings (2nd century BCE-5th century CE, UNESCO World Heritage), Ellora's rock-cut temples (UNESCO, featuring Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain caves carved from the Deccan basalt), and Bibi Ka Maqbara ("poor man's Taj") built by Mughal prince Azam Shah for his mother. The district's Himroo weaving tradition — a silk-cotton blend fabric with raised floral patterns historically woven for the Nizam's court — is produced by a declining cluster of looms in the Naukhanda area of Aurangabad city. Aurangabad's proximity to Yeola town (Nashik district) where Paithani silk saris are woven provides economic linkage for the region's silk weaving heritage.
