Assam Bamboo Craft of Bongaigaon and Barpeta

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Assam has one of the richest bamboo craft traditions in India, using over 40 species of bamboo found in the Brahmaputra valley and foothills. Bongaigaon and Barpeta districts are major production centres for bamboo baskets, mats, fish traps, and household goods. The Bodo and Koch Rajbongshi communities are the traditional bamboo workers. Bamboo splitting, weaving, and twisting are taught within families from childhood. Products range from everyday items (supari dung — betel nut container, handari — carrying basket) to luxury items (lacquered bamboo trays and lamp shades). The Assam Bamboo and Cane Development Corporation coordinates craft training and export marketing. Japanese and European buyers source Assam bamboo tableware for organic kitchenware markets. Assam bamboo shoot is also processed as a food product alongside the craft tradition. NABARD bamboo mission programs provide financial support for plantation and processing equipment to cooperative artisans.
