Alphonso Mango Cultivation in Ratnagiri Maharashtra

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Alphonso mango (Mangifera indica cv. Hapus) from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Devgad districts of Maharashtra is widely considered the premium table mango globally, prized for its saffron-yellow flesh, intense sweetness, low fibre, and complex aroma from ester compounds. The coastal laterite soil and warm humid climate of the Konkan coast produces the distinctive Hapus flavour. The orchard trees are traditional grafted varieties — Ratnagiri Hapus received GI status in 2018, one of the first mango GIs in India. Season runs from April to June. Traditional post-harvest practice involves wrapping individual fruits in newspaper and packing in wooden crates with padded mango leaves. Export to UAE, UK, Japan, and USA through APEDA-registered exporters. Maharashtra Mango Growers Cooperative and Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth provide technical support for post-harvest handling and cold chain management.
