On Friday, transportation networks in much of North India were impacted by the dense fog that covered large areas. Flight delays at major airports, such as Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, and significant disruption to train schedules have been caused by the adverse weather conditions. At least 24 trains experienced delays, and over 100 flights were delayed, affecting thousands of passengers. Due to poor visibility, major highways have also been subject to traffic jams.
In Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana visibility was almost zero due to the thick fog. Prior to arriving at the airport, airlines like IndiGo and SpiceJet issued travel advisories that advised travelers to verify schedules. Delays of flights were still a common issue, with many passengers being stuck in terminals.
Commuters had to quickly rearrange plans on major express trains, such as Ayodhya Express, Bihar Kranti Express and Gorakhdham Express which were delayed by up to four hours. The outcome has resulted in significant difficulties, particularly for those who travel frequently and are heading to distant places.
The fog was attributed to a combination of mild winds, calm winds and low temperatures during the night, as stated by an official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The recommendation was made to be patient and verify flight as well as train schedules online. IndiGo stated that the safety of passengers and crew is their top priority.
From late December to February, North India is prone to severe fog during the winter season. This is particularly challenging in this region. The dense fog and deteriorating air quality frequently cause disruptions in daily life. Even though Delhi’s AQI fell to 351 from its previous record, it still ranks as “very poor,” posing a significant health risk, especially for people with respiratory illnesses.
Advanced weather-monitoring systems and navigational aids are being considered by the Railways and Civil Aviation Ministry as a means of mitigating adverse transport effects. Delays not only affect passengers but also freight movement, leading to economic consequences. However, Similar delays were observed at airports in Lucknow, Jaipur, and Chandigarh, where connecting flights to international destinations were also affected. The fog has created obstacles for those walking or driving on dimly lit roads and highways, in addition to transportation, which have made the roads hazardous.
The authorities have urged passengers to remain vigilant and trust official updates. To minimize the impact of fog in upcoming winters, long-term solutions are being considered such as improved technological interventions like CAT III B systems at airports and real-time train-tracking software. Climate change is expected to become more unpredictable, making it essential for sustainable solutions to manage recurring disruptions. Currently, passengers are advised to plan their journeys with delaying measures and prioritize safety.
