In a major success against Left-Wing Extremism, security forces in Chhattisgarh eliminated 22 Naxalites in an intense encounter in Bijapur district on March 20, 2025. The operation, led by a joint team of DRG (District Reserve Guard), CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), and STF (Special Task Force), resulted in heavy casualties on the Naxal side. Unfortunately, one security personnel lost his life during the gunfight.

The Encounter: How It Unfolded

Acting on intelligence reports about the movement of Naxal leaders in Gangaloor area of Bijapur, security forces launched a covert search operation in the early morning hours of March 20. As forces approached a suspected hideout, Naxalites opened fire, triggering a fierce gunbattle that lasted several hours.

Heavy Casualties on Naxal Side

By the time the encounter ended, 22 Naxalites were confirmed dead. Among them were several senior Maoist commanders believed to be involved in multiple attacks on security forces in the past. Security forces also recovered a large cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives from the encounter site.

Loss of a Brave Soldier

While security forces secured a major victory, one District Reserve Guard (DRG) jawan was martyred in the operation. His sacrifice has been acknowledged by state and central leaders, who have assured full support to his family.

Weapons Recovered from the Site

The security forces seized:

  • AK-47 and INSAS rifles
  • Country-made weapons
  • IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices)
  • Wireless communication equipment
  • Naxalite propaganda material

Impact on Naxal Insurgency

This encounter is a major blow to Naxal activities in the Bastar region. Intelligence reports suggest that the deceased insurgents were key figures in planning ambushes and attacks on security forces. The operation significantly weakens their organizational structure in Chhattisgarh.

Reactions from Officials

Senior officials and government leaders have hailed the bravery of the security personnel. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai congratulated the forces for their success, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating Left-Wing Extremism (LWE).

Challenges Ahead

Despite this success, security forces remain on high alert, as more Naxalite groups may retaliate in the coming days. Officials have warned that Naxals may regroup and launch counter-attacks in other parts of Bastar.

Government’s Anti-Naxal Strategy

The Indian government has been actively implementing Operation SAMADHAN, a strategy aimed at tackling Maoist insurgency through:

  • Intensified security operations
  • Development programs in Naxal-hit regions
  • Improved road and communication infrastructure
  • De-radicalization efforts for surrendered Naxalites

Moving Ahead

The successful operation in Bijapur has delivered a major blow to Naxalite forces in Chhattisgarh. While the loss of a brave soldier is deeply mourned, the elimination of 22 insurgents marks a step forward in restoring peace in the region. The fight against Left-Wing Extremism continues, with security forces remaining vigilant for any further threats.
