Wardha Khadi Gandhian Ashram Cooperative Maharashtra

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Wardha district in Maharashtra is the spiritual and political heart of India Gandhian cooperative movement. Mahatma Gandhi established Sevagram Ashram near Wardha in 1936, and the ashram cooperative produces hand-spun khadi cotton fabric, oil-pressed products, herbal medicines, and organic vegetables as part of its self-sufficiency model. Khadi production cooperatives in Wardha, Yavatmal, and Nagpur supply hand-spun yarn and handloom cloth to KVIC outlets and Gandhi Bhavan stores. The Wardha cooperative movement is also central to India village industries revival through crafts like oil pressing, soap making, and hand-paper. Magan Sangrahalaya in Wardha showcases cooperative rural technology tools. Wardha is also the base of MGIRI, which trains cooperative managers nationally.
