Kakatiya Fort and Thousand Pillar Temple Heritage of Warangal

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Warangal was the capital of the Kakatiya dynasty (1163–1323 CE) — one of the most powerful Telugu kingdoms of medieval South India. The Warangal Fort's four ornate stone gateways (kakatiya thoranams) — each a massive arch of sculpted elephant brackets — are among the most photographed monuments in Telangana. The Thousand Pillar temple (Rudreshwara, 1163 CE) within the fort represents the highest achievement of Kakatiya architectural and sculptural art, with 1,000 beautifully carved black basalt pillars supporting the main hall. The fort's massive earthen and stone rampart, moat, and military gateway complex reflect sophisticated medieval military engineering. The Kakatiya dynasty also built Pakhal Lake and hundreds of irrigation tanks across Telangana.
