Vizianagaram Fort and Pusapati Royal Heritage Architecture

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Vizianagaram Fort was the capital of the Pusapati (Vizianagaram Maharaja) dynasty, which ruled as a powerful zamindari estate under the Nizam of Hyderabad and later the British. The fort's massive laterite stone walls, elaborate gatehouse, and royal palace complex reflect the wealth of a dynasty that controlled significant coastal Andhra territory for centuries. The Vizianagaram Maharajas were great patrons of Carnatic music — the Vizianagaram royal court was a centre of classical music from the 18th century, and their sponsorship produced several celebrated Carnatic composers. The fort's Kota Durga Bhavani temple, maintained by the erstwhile royal family, remains an important pilgrimage site. The fort complex is now partly used for administrative offices and partly preserved as a heritage site.
