Milam Glacier and Gori Ganga Valley Ecology Pithoragarh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Milam Glacier in Pithoragarh district is among Uttarakhand's most significant glaciers feeding the Gori Ganga river system. The Munsiyari-Milam trekking route passes through one of the most botanically diverse corridors in the Western Himalayas with distinct vegetation zones from subtropical forest through temperate oak-rhododendron belt to alpine meadows (bugyals) covered with medicinal herbs. Traditional Shauka and Johari community knowledge of glacier behaviour, seasonal water availability, and mountain weather patterns is documented by climate researchers. The Gori Ganga valley supported the Johar trade route to Tibet historically. Community-maintained rest houses (dharamshalas) along the route reflect traditional hospitality infrastructure for mountain travel.
