Dhari Devi Temple and Alaknanda Riverine Heritage Pauri
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Dhari Devi temple near Srinagar in Pauri Garhwal sits on a rock in the Alaknanda river and is considered the guardian deity of Uttarakhand. The temple was temporarily relocated in 2013 before Tehri reservoir submersion, and hours after the move the 2013 Kedarnath flood catastrophe struck - a coincidence interpreted spiritually by devotees. The original temple built directly on river rock with distinctive hill architecture is a unique example of sacred space integrated with river ecology. The Alaknanda flowing through Pauri district is flanked by traditional villages with stone-and-wood architecture typical of lower Garhwal hills. Festival processions carrying the deity image to river banks for bathing maintain ancient ritual traditions.
