Apple and Strawberry Hill Horticulture Nainital
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The higher altitude areas of Nainital district above 1500 metres support production of temperate fruits including apple, pear, plum, and apricot. Strawberry cultivation has emerged as a high-value crop around Bhimtal and Sattal lakes where the microclimate and soil conditions favour fruit quality. Tourist demand drives direct farm sales and agro-tourism combining orchard visits with accommodation. Traditional varieties of hill apple with strong flavour though irregular appearance are favoured by local consumers over commercial varieties. Women's self-help groups process surplus fruit into jams, squashes, and dried products adding value and extending shelf life. Altitude-specific varieties developed through traditional farmer selection show resilience to local diseases.
