Valley of Flowers: UNESCO Heritage Botanical Diversity Chamoli

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Valley of Flowers National Park in Chamoli district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its spectacular display of Himalayan wild flowers blooming July through September in a high-altitude valley at 3658 metres. Over 600 species of wild flowers have been documented in the valley including rare endemic species, medicinal plants, and botanically significant specimens. Botanical knowledge of this valley contributed to development of high-altitude medicinal plant research. Traditional shepherds and traders using this as a route to Hemkund Sahib had knowledge of the valley's seasonal blooms and medicinal plant locations long before scientific documentation. Conservation regulations prohibit grazing and collection protecting this living botanical repository. The valley represents the apex of accessible Himalayan botanical diversity in India.
