Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve: UNESCO World Heritage Chamoli

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve in Chamoli district surrounding India's second highest peak (7816m) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting one of the world's most pristine high-altitude ecosystems. The inner sanctuary inaccessible since 1983 allows complete ecological recovery demonstrating the healing capacity of undisturbed Himalayan ecosystems. The buffer zone maintains traditional land use by Bhotiyas, Van Gujjars, and other communities whose seasonal movement patterns and resource use evolved over millennia to maintain ecological balance. Traditional ecological knowledge about biodiversity, seasonal resource availability, and climate indicators held by local communities provides invaluable baseline data for scientific monitoring. Conservation efforts integrate community livelihoods through ecotourism and sustainable collection of non-timber forest products.
