Tarn Taran Basmati Paddy Cultivation Punjab

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Tarn Taran district, bordering Pakistan along the Ravi floodplain, is one of Punjab's primary basmati rice growing zones, producing the long-grain aromatic varieties Pusa Basmati 1121 and traditional Basmati 370. Farmers transplant paddy seedlings in June after wheat harvest, managing irrigation through the Upper Bari Doab Canal system, and harvest in October. The alluvial soil and cool October nights of Tarn Taran's Majha belt develop the characteristic basmati fragrance that earns premium prices in Amritsar rice mills for export to Middle Eastern markets.
